Magpies Dollshouse Miniatures make their début appearance at the Autumn 2017 Miniatura, although many people will know them from the various fairs they regularly attend all around the UK and Europe.

Peter and Joyce Bale of North Somerset make and sell 1/12 dolls' house miniatures, furniture, kits, accessories and figures. The couple make a lot of the furniture and bespoke items themselves and take commissions. Quite recently Peter has built a wind-up 1930s gramophone while Joyce does a lot of framed prints and hand-painted figurines. The couple have also been working with miniaturist, Peter Clark well known for his models of game birds, intricately hand painting his models. These will be on sale at Miniatura.

It all started for Peter and Joyce when they decided to renovate a dolls' house that had been neglected for some years. Peter's father had originally made it for Peter's daughter. Now Peter and Joyce wanted to restore if for their granddaughter. The couple found themselves frequenting the dolls' house shops that were around at the time but before long Peter realised it might not be a bad idea to have a go at making things themselves. So around 2004 they put the wheels in motion to starting their hobby.

Peter told Miniatura: “Initially we were involved with buying up various sets and kits and that sort of thing, but we soon realised they weren't very good quality. We ceased supplying the dolls house kits as they were rather cumbersome, and occupied too much space. We also conducted a review, asking customers what they wanted, and we've gone from there. After a period of time you get to know what tends to sell best.”

Their very first fair was in their home town of Weston Super Mare, where they started with just one table. Since then they have travelled to fairs all over the UK as well as to Belgium, Holland and Germany. The Autumn Miniatura will be their first time at the show. Peter added: “We tend to attend various fairs regularly so people can get to know us. They always ask when we'll be there again, so hopefully Miniatura will be a regular event too.”
