With 40 years in the business of making architectural models for businesses, film and TV, John Payne of Miniature Mansions knows a thing or two about creating realistic settings. He was professionally trained by one of the leading model making companies, and has since worked on countless projects, not least a model set of Hogwarts for the Harry Potter films.

Another major project that Miniature Mansions were commissioned to do was to build a doll’s house replica of one of the main buildings in Taylor Wimpey’s Argyle Place Town House and Mews Development – property in the £2 million market. This doll’s house was to be the main feature of an exhibition in Hong Kong. However, the usual scales of 1/12th and 1/24th weren’t suitable, so it had to be built to 1/16th scale, meaning that every single item, from furnishings to fitments had to be built from scratch. Incredibly, John and the team of skilled model makers he gathered around him, had just one month to complete the build. Wimpey arranged for professional photographs to be taken at every stage. Pop over to the website to view the process.

Miniature Mansions has two finely crafted, exquisitely detailed dolls houses in their catalogue – the Knightsbridge and the Chelsea which John says, are for the very serious collector. And currently, he is concentrating on producing resin mouldings for dolls house owners wishing to decorate their houses in period style, particularly Georgian and Victoria.

“You can create beautiful rooms with our easy to use, finely detailed resin mouldings, hand crafted to produce that exceptional look,” says John. “Our unique resin mouldings are more durable, hard wearing and as easy to use as alternative plaster mouldings. They are very user friendly. They are easy to cut, glue and paint and they won’t break.”

On his website, there is a video and step-by-step instructions on aspects of decorating a doll’s house using his resin mouldings. He has also written a very useful book:  'Designing to Decorating', which is ideal for both experienced and novice doll's house decorators. The book gives clear step-by-step instructions on all the processes of decorating a doll's house using resin mouldings.

John adds: “We supply these mouldings because inspiration should never be restricted when it comes to decorating a doll’s house. Whatever style you have in mind and whatever size or shape the room, our resin mouldings make it easy. They can even bend to a curve!”
